The 4 Fertility Mistakes Most Women Make While Trying to Conceive

By: Dr. Alyssa McPeak, DC, CFMP

You're tracking ovulation.

You're peeing on sticks.

You're timing intercourse.

You're taking a prenatal.

And yet... month after month, you're staring at another negative pregnancy test wondering what you're doing wrong.

If this sounds familiar, I want you to know something:

You are not broken.

But you may be focusing on the wrong thing.

One of the biggest mistakes I see women make when trying to conceive is putting all of their attention on ovulation and almost none on the other 29 days of the month.

The truth is that fertility is not built in a single day.

It's built every day.

Every meal you eat. Every hormone your body produces. Every signal your body receives throughout your cycle.

Ovulation is simply the final exam.

Your body has been studying for it all month long.

Let's talk about the 4 biggest nutrition mistakes I see women make while trying to conceive—and what to do instead.

Mistake #1: Not Eating Enough Protein (Or the Right Kind of Protein)

If I had a dollar for every woman who told me she eats "pretty healthy" and then realized she was getting 40 grams of protein per day, I could probably retire.

Protein is the foundation of fertility.

Your body uses amino acids from protein to:

  • Build hormones

  • Support egg quality

  • Support ovulation

  • Regulate blood sugar

  • Build a healthy uterine lining

  • Support baby once conception occurs

Many women trying to conceive are unintentionally under-eating protein or relying heavily on processed protein bars, shakes, and convenience foods.

Focus on high-quality protein sources such as:

  • Grass-fed beef

  • Chicken

  • Turkey

  • Eggs

  • Wild-caught fish

  • Plain Greek yogurt

  • Cottage cheese

  • Bone broth protein

Aim to include protein with every meal and snack, getting 3/4 of your body weight in grams of protein/day.

Your hormones will thank you.

Mistake #2: Skipping Meals

I know.

You're busy.

You have meetings.

You have kids.

You get distracted.

Coffee becomes breakfast.

Lunch happens at 2 PM.

And suddenly you're standing in your kitchen at night wondering why you are eating everything in sight.

Consistently skipping meals creates stress for the body.

When blood sugar becomes unstable, cortisol rises and hormone production can suffer.

Your body needs consistent nourishment to feel safe enough to prioritize reproduction.

Remember:

A stressed body will not be a fertile body.

Eating balanced meals (with protein, vegetables, and healthy fats) throughout the day helps support blood sugar, hormone production, thyroid function, and ovulation.

Mistake #3: Eating the Same Foods Every Day

Many women find an "easy + healthy" routine and stick with it.

The same smoothie.

The same salad.

The same protein bar.

The same chicken and vegetables.

Every. Single. Day.

While consistency can be helpful with not having to think about it, fertility thrives on nutrient diversity.

Certain foods at specific times during your cycle provide different vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, amino acids, and phytonutrients that your hormones need to be created.

Your ovaries don't just need calories.

They need nutrients.

Rotating foods helps provide:

  • B vitamins

  • Zinc

  • Selenium

  • Magnesium

  • Iron

  • Antioxidants

  • Healthy fats

The more variety you eat, the more nutritional tools your body has available to support fertility.

Mistake #4: Not Eating the Right Foods at the Right Times

This is where most women have their biggest breakthrough.

Your hormones are not the same all month long.

So why are you eating the same way every day?

Your body has different nutritional needs during:

  • Menstruation

  • Follicular Phase

  • Ovulation

  • Luteal Phase

For example:

During your follicular phase, your body benefits from foods that support estrogen production and egg development.

During ovulation, antioxidant-rich foods can help protect egg quality.

During your luteal phase, your body needs additional nutrients to support progesterone production and prepare for potential implantation.

When you learn how to eat with your hormones instead of against them, everything changes.

This is called Cycle Syncing.

Fertility Is Built All Month Long

One of the biggest mindset shifts I teach women is this:

Pregnancy doesn't start at ovulation.

The process of creating a healthy egg, balancing hormones, supporting ovulation, preparing the uterine lining, and creating an environment where implantation can occur happens throughout your entire cycle.

Your body is gathering information every day.

Every meal is a message.

Every nutrient is a signal.

Every choice is either supporting fertility or creating additional stress.

That's why focusing on ovulation alone often leaves women frustrated.

Your fertility journey deserves a bigger picture approach.
